Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), in Washington, DC, is seeking a Communications Manager for full-time permanent work.

Job description: The Communications Manager is responsible for managing all of RAINN’s media activities. Will have extensive contact with media and help set policy and shape messages to promote awareness of RAINN to the public and key influencers. One key responsibility will be managing the upcoming national launch of a high-profile new service. The Communications Manager will report to the V.P. of Communications.

Duties

• Develop a variety of media outreach materials including press releases, press kits, briefing materials, talking points and brochures.

• Respond to press inquiries and assist reporters with research, interview suggestions and statistics.

• Build relationships with media. Research and identify story opportunities and pitch stories to media.

• Produce newsletter and other vehicles to communicate with our 1,100 local affiliates.

• Create content for rainn.org, which receives 3.2 million hits/month.

• Implement communications and media strategy to launch the nation’s first secure online hotline.

• Identify and develop strategic marketing partnerships to promote the online hotline.

• Implement strategy to make best use of RAINN’s celebrity supporters.

Job skills: Qualifications

• Minimum two years media relations experience.

• Demonstrated success leading media and public communications efforts.

• Aggressive, creative and innovative spirit with a deep understanding of public communications and marketing.

• Exceptional written communication skills and high attention to detail.

  9. Nortel Networks, in Washington, DC, is looking for Interns. Position would require full time during summer, part time during schools year (fall and spring semesters 1999-2000) (25+ hours).

    Job Description: Attend and report on legislative activities in Congress and at relevant administrative agencies and departments and trade associations related to telecommunications, international trade and other policy issues of interest to Nortel; review trade press; analyze legislation; attend Congressional hearings; attend meetings at trade associations; research and report on federal issues of concern to the company.

    It is an excellent and very substantive position that provides in-depth telecommunications experience. The pay is competitive depending on a candidate's level of relevant experience. There are usually two interns in an office of about 13 people who handle domestic telecommunications policy, international trade, and congressional issues. Interns are expected to handle much of the same workload (including attending meetings) as regular staff. Limited benefits (holidays and personal days) are provided along with some perks (such as business cards). Candidates must have a strong telecoms background (coursework and relevant work experience preferred) with a good understanding of international trade issues. Relevant issues include: Implementation of the 1996 Telecom Act, spectrum and wireless regulation, encryption, disability issues, international market access (especially Asia), export controls, WTO, sanctions, and the R&D tax credit.

    Candidates with experience on the Hill and/or other congressional experience will be given preference. Ideal candidates will be finishing their first year of a two-year program (or their second year of a three-year program), and must be able to begin work by the end of this semester (April/early May 1999) so that they can overlap with out-going interns for orientation/training. During the school year candidates should be able to work 25+ hours, and work fulltime (40+ hours) during the summer.

    The office is located near the Hill with close proximity to two metro stops: Archives (Yellow Line at location) and Federal Triangle (Orange Line 3 blocks). Commuting time via metro/walking or bus to Georgetown campus is about 40 minutes. There is no free parking at or near the work place.

    Job Skills: Highly motivated, conscientious graduate or law student with demonstrated interest in domestic and international telecommunications policy, Congressional affairs, international trade issues, federal procurement, tax and human resources issues, politics, public affairs and government relations. Excellent research and writing skills; ability to track and report on complex issues orally and in writing. Candidate will need to be a quick study and be able to handle a number of issues simultaneously. Knowledge of Netscape and Microsoft Word/Office, Windows 95.
