 The Meaning of Matrix
The Matrix, in old linotype typesetting, was a
mold for casting typefaces. The founders of
AWC's original Theta Sigma Phi organization -
seven female journalism students from the University
of Washington in Seattle-chose the symbol for its
broader meaning as a "place where something
takes form or develops." They felt it symbolized the
mission of the group: to raise the standards of the
communications profession, to improve working
conditions for women in it, and to inspire members
to excel in their chosen careers.
