What: A Thought-Provoking Program on the 5th Anniversary of 9/11

Reporting on Disasters Without Adding to the Trauma

When covering disasters, how can reporters prevent the content and method of
delivery from transmitting further trauma? The public takes reporters' cues
on the seriousness of an event and the reverberations of its implications,
whether it's the Oklahoma City bombing, the World Trade Center collapsing
before our eyes, random sniper attacks, innocent women and children dying in
Iraq, or the escalating war between Lebanon and Israel.

Dr. Mary Gregerson, media psychologist, editor and author of disaster and security related materials will discuss how media and psychology can work together to counter terrorism designed to escalate from violent acts.

Dr. Gregerson, an environmental health psychologist specializing in families, trauma, and the media, is the former Chair of the American Red Cross National Capital Chapter Disaster Mental Health Service. She is also a member of the DC Chapter, the Association for Women in Communications and edits the newsletter The Amplifier for the American Psychological Association Division 46 Media Psychology.
